After completing his studies at the Munich Music Academy, Bresgen took up a post teaching composition at the Mozarteum in Salzburg beginning in 1939. In that same year he established a conservatory for young people in the city. A period of study with Hindemith followed in 1950, during which he conducted experiments with 12-tone serialism. His body of work comprises orchestral and stage pieces that combine music, spoken text, dance, and pantomime, as well as songs, chamber compositions, and music written for students. Hindemith, Orff, Bartok, and Stravinsky number among the influences on his style.
