Instrumental performers in the NAC sphere, especially those rooted in smooth jazz or pop instrumentals, sometimes bring in singers and move toward adult contemporary material. Leading smooth jazz names including Dave Koz, Kenny G, Boney James, and Najee concentrate on instrumentals yet still partner with vocalists from time to time, as when Kenny G enlisted adult contemporary artist Michael Bolton. Chad Beall operates in a similar manner as a smooth jazz and new age instrumentalist who welcomes vocal contributions.

Born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he continues to live, Beall works as an acoustic pianist, producer, songwriter, and lyricist whose music targets smooth jazz, NAC, new age, and adult contemporary listeners. His releases fall into two groups: smooth jazz, new age, and pop instrumentals, or adult contemporary songs—many of them ballads—that spotlight vocalists.

On piano, Beall recalls Bob James, David Benoit, and Alex Bugnon, and he has likewise been likened to new age figures such as George Winston and Yanni. In 2002 the Albuquerque resident issued his debut album, Dedications, on his own imprint, Shockwerks Media. In addition to producing the project, Beall composed every selection, among them seven instrumentals and five adult contemporary vocal tracks featuring singers Alisha Howard, Adrian Payne, and Lanny Anderson.
