In 1996 the San Francisco outfit Channel 23 assembled with the goal of charting fresh experimental territory that fused funk references, trip-hop rhythms, and assorted electronic textures. The four-piece lineup featured Eenor on vocals and guitar, Kimo on bass, Brendan on woodwinds, and Fil on drums. After two years of untamed gigs throughout the city’s underground clubs, the group entered the studio to cut its first album. The resulting record, Float, reached stores in 1998, where it posted unexpected sales and confirmed the band’s artistic direction. Channel 23 gradually cultivated a loyal audience through its unusual thematic blends and commanding live shows, whose futuristic visuals and exotic staging further heightened the ensemble’s creative authority.
