Biography
Chano Pozo was instrumental in establishing Latin jazz as a fusion of bebop rhythms and traditional Cuban folk elements. His foundational skills stemmed from participation in Cuban religious cults. Upon relocating to New York City during 1947, he encountered Dizzy Gillespie, who eagerly incorporated him into the trumpeter's large bebop ensemble. Performances alongside Gillespie included the pieces "Cubana Be," "Cubana Bop," "Tin Tin Deo," and "Manteca," with Pozo sharing writing credits on the final pair. Tragically, his volatile temperament led to his demise in a Harlem bar just before reaching age thirty-four.
