Emerging from San Francisco, California, toward the close of the 1990s, the Chantigs introduced fresh perspectives to alternative pop. Their sound drew from a bold mix of alternative rock and indie pop, yet the quartet carved an independent path deep into experimental rock territory. Duke on bass and vocals, Josh on drums, Greg on guitar and vocals, and Elton on guitar shaped the group’s identity through wandering, melodically distinct thematic explorations. Early on, the band cultivated a devoted following thanks to its energetic stage shows, prompting the members to self-record and self-produce their first album at the start of 1999. That debut, Up with the Chantigs, demonstrated sharpened songwriting ability and lifted the group’s profile beyond the regional underground. After nearly twelve months of nationwide live dates, the Chantigs returned to the studio for their next recording. Issued later the same year, the sophomore full-length The Mission Faucet earned notable press recognition.
