Biography
Joe Pernice, the singer-songwriter long identified as the driving force behind the alt-country outfit Scud Mountain Boys and its chamber-pop forerunner the Pernice Brothers, conceived Chappaquiddick Skyline as a side venture. While completing a master’s degree in creative writing and poetry at the University of Massachusetts, he helped establish the Northampton-based Scuds in 1991; the group drew widespread praise for the poignant lyrics and memorable melodies showcased on releases such as the 1996 album Massachusetts. Seeking to leave behind that ensemble’s spare, rural sound, Pernice joined forces with his brother Bob to pursue richly arranged pop, resulting in the Pernice Brothers’ 1998 release Overcome by Happiness, which earned additional acclaim. Chappaquiddick Skyline drew its personnel from the Pernice Brothers’ road band, incorporating bassist Thom Monahan, guitarist Peyton Pinkerton, keyboardist Laura Stein, and drummer Mike Belitsky; the ensemble’s acclaimed debut album surfaced on Sub Pop in early 2000.
