Biography
An English composer and musicographer whose contributions left an enduring mark on musical history, Charles Burney also worked as an organist and provided private lessons. His training came first from Baker, then from Arne. Burney met both Handel and Haydn, and he produced an array of treatises that addressed comets, musical life in Germany and the Netherlands, a comprehensive history of music, conditions in France and Italy, and commissioned articles for "Ree's Cyclopaedia". Many of his works arose directly from his teaching activities, leading him probably to become the earliest composer of music for two players at one keyboard. His output encompassed sonatas, concertos, preludes, fugues, duets, songs, and anthems.
