His composition training took place under Richard Hervig, Gunther Schuller, Jack Beeson, Chou Wen-chung, and Otto Luening, while Ussachevsky oversaw his electronic music work and Godfrey Winham supervised his computer music studies. Research activities were carried out at IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Bell Telephone Labs, and the University of California at San Diego. Teaching appointments followed at Columbia, Princeton, and Brooklyn College.
