Biography
An eclectic collective anchored by saxophonist Charles Lloyd and guitarist Bill Frisell, Charles Lloyd & the Marvels crafts an expansive strain of jazz that incorporates the players' affinities for modal post-bop, country, surf rock, and additional styles. The ensemble surfaced in 2016, unveiling its first recording, I Long to See You, on Blue Note.
The project originated in 2015, sparked by a 2013 appearance Lloyd made at UCLA's Royce Hall, where guitarist Frisell joined him onstage. Following his Blue Note signing and the release of 2015's Wild Man Dance, the saxophonist intended to issue the captured Royce Hall performance as his next project. Instead, his wife and producer Dorothy Darr alongside producer Don Was persuaded him to create an entirely fresh album alongside Frisell. Completing the lineup were steel guitarist Greg Leisz plus longtime Lloyd collaborators bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland. Now known as Charles Lloyd & the Marvels, the group launched its career in 2016 via the album I Long to See You, which featured guest contributions from Norah Jones and Willie Nelson.
After touring alongside the Marvels, Lloyd resumed activity with his New Quartet, again featuring Rogers, Harland, and pianist Jason Moran. He rejoined the Marvels in 2018 for Vanished Gardens, a project shared with Americana singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams. The recording contained newly arranged renditions of four Williams compositions along with a version of Jimi Hendrix's "Angel."
