Biography
Long before earning their high-school diplomas, the brother-and-sister act Charlie Belle had already issued two EPs and performed at SXSW for five consecutive years. The Bonds family’s older child, Jendayi, handled vocals and songwriting on guitar while her younger brother Gyasi supplied the drumming; both had absorbed music early through lessons at the School of Rock and Girls Rock Camp close to their Philadelphia upbringing. Rehearsing Motown, funk, reggae, and classic-rock numbers left a soulful imprint on the ’90s alt-pop and Brit-pop they later adopted. After the household relocated to Austin, Texas, the siblings formalized the group and chose its name in honor of their great-grandmother. Growing visibility prompted the 2015 appearance of their first EP, Get to Know, recorded with bassist Zoe Czarnecki, followed by I Don’t Want to Be Alone, which featured David Andersen on bass.
