Born as Charles Robert Munro on 22 May 1917 in Christchurch, New Zealand, the musician died on 9 December 1985 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Proficiency on multiple members of the saxophone family came early, prompting a move to Australia and the start of a lengthy tenure as a sought-after session player. Much of that work unfolded amid the commercial demands of dance ensembles and theatrical productions, yet his expansive artistic outlook created productive links with free jazz. He further absorbed influences from global musical traditions, took up the cello after formal study, and supplied sensitive backing for vocalists.
