Biography
Born in Arkansas yet now calling Memphis, TN home, singer/songwriter Chase Pagan crafts heart-on-sleeve material that evokes Jeff Buckley refracted through the Coldplay generation, intertwining earnest lyrics and impassioned vocals—frequently delivered in falsetto—with agreeably hook-driven keyboard-centered alternative pop. Unexpectedly, his background also reaches into the post-hardcore alternative metal world; an initial production agreement materialized after his demos reached members of the screamo outfit Glassjaw, who then steered him toward leading nu metal producer Ross Robinson (Limp Bizkit, Slipknot). Through Robinson’s own imprint, I Am Recordings, Pagan secured a Geffen Records contract and, backed by Glassjaw’s Manny Carrero along with Jane’s Addiction’s Stephen Perkins and additional players, tracked his intended first album across 2004 and into early 2005. Geffen’s dismissal of the completed project prompted Pagan to recognize the creative signals and pivot away from both Robinson and his nu metal direction toward a thorough artistic reset. Reemerging as a sensitive rocker, he captured his revised debut album, Oh, Musica!, in one concentrated two-week session built around predominantly acoustic settings and assorted theatrical flourishes. Late 2006 brought a deal with the independent imprint The Militia Group, followed by the free digital issuance of his opening EP, Oh, Musica!, the next July.
