James Cargill and Roj Stevens, both formerly of Broadcast, teamed up with the Focus Group's Julian House to create Children of Alice, extending the ethereal experimental electronics they had pursued in their earlier work. The ensemble took its name in memory of Broadcast's late vocalist Trish Keenan, a devoted admirer of Alice in Wonderland who cited Jonathan Miller's 1966 television adaptation of the tale as one of her principal influences. Children of Alice first appeared in 2013 with the twenty-minute piece "The Harbinger of Spring," presented as one side of the limited-edition split cassette Devon Folklore Tapes, Vol. 5: Ornithology, shared with Mary Arches on the Folklore Tapes imprint. The same composition later surfaced on the group's self-titled debut album, issued by Warp in February 2017.
