Biography
Chip White stands out as a skilled percussionist in sophisticated jazz environments while also proving himself a gifted composer. His introduction to drumming came at the age of nine. He enrolled at Ithaca College, pursued studies at the Berklee School of Music, and subsequently received instruction in orchestration and arranging from Frank Foster. Throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, White collaborated with leading jazz figures such as Carmen McRae, Jaki Byard, John Abercrombie, Johnny Coles, Enrico Rava, Mulgrew Miller, Gary Bartz, and John Hicks, appearing on recordings with many of these artists. In 1984 he established the Chip White Ensemble, went on to produce the jazz musical Manhattan Moments in 1990, and joined tours with the Houston Person-Etta Jones Quintet. His first album as a bandleader arrived in 1994 with the release of Harlem Sunset on the Postcards label.
