Biography
Cham rose to prominence as one of dancehall's standout figures across the Caribbean, an achievement made all the more notable by his teenage entry into the music business. Favoring riddims with measured tempos, he placed strong emphasis on lyrical content while still venturing into tracks designed for wider audiences. Aligning with the accomplished producer Dave "The Stranger" Kelly placed him at the forefront of the Madhouse label, helping him gain traction in the American market during the first years of the 2000s.
Born Damian Beckett in Kingston, Jamaica, he spent his formative years in the Marverly and Waterhouse districts. Exposure to recording sessions came early through his uncle, whose studio housed sound equipment and hosted established artists such as Super Cat. Around 1993 he crossed paths with Kelly, yet the producer held off on sustained collaboration until the aspiring performer completed his education. In the meantime, Spragga Benz stepped in to record the duet "Cocomania" in 1994, which secured Cham his initial radio exposure while still sixteen.
Once schooling ended, a series of Kelly-produced singles from the mid- to late 1990s drew widespread attention within dancehall circles, among them "Many Many," "Man & Man," and the provocative "Boom," whose themes of oral sex led Jamaican authorities to prohibit live performances. The pair assembled the 2000 double-disc collection Wow... The Story, gathering earlier successes alongside fresh recordings. Continued outreach eventually carried Cham into U.S. markets, where the suggestive crossover single "Vitamin S" appeared in 2003, prompting a distribution agreement with Atlantic Records and a subsequent reissue the following year. His major-label debut, Ghetto Story, arrived in mid-August 2006 under Atlantic and featured guest contributions from Alicia Keys and Akon, bringing him near the level of visibility enjoyed by Sean Paul. A lengthy absence from mainstream attention ended in 2012 with the singles "Wine" and "Tun Up" plus the Team Cham EP. The next year saw the non-album release "Fighter," recorded with Damian Marley. His third project, Lawless, spent several years in development before surfacing in the summer of 2017.
