Biography
The alterna-pop trio Chopper One centers on spouses Jason Cropper, who handles guitar and vocals, and Amy Cropper, who plays bass and sings, alongside drummer Tyrone Rio. Jason’s earlier history includes co-founding Weezer and earning a songwriting credit on “My Name Is Jonas,” though he departed just as sessions for the group’s first album got underway. His exit stemmed from personal circumstances rather than creative differences: with Amy pregnant for the first time, he chose to skip the extensive touring that would follow the release so he could focus on raising their child. The couple later married, during which time Jason instructed Amy on bass. Together they started Braxton Hicks, a project that dissolved once its drummer Darren departed for the alterna-ska outfit Goldfinger. After recruiting Tyrone Rio in fall 1995, the musicians adopted the name Chopper One, inked a deal with Restless Records, and issued their debut album Now Playing—produced by Don Fleming—in summer 1997. Jason has since produced a full-length for Crumbox, and both he and Amy contributed to a release by 22 Jacks.
