Chris Albertson has earned recognition as a perceptive critic whose contributions have strengthened jazz journalism across decades. Chief among them is his oversight of Riverside's The Living Legends series in the early 1960s, an effort that brought numerous performers active in the 1920s and 1930s back into the recording studio while time remained, together with his body of work on Bessie Smith. The thorough liner notes he prepared for Columbia's 1970 reissue of her complete recordings proved especially significant, directly informing the research behind his 1972 biography Bessie.
