Biography
With a rich baritone vocal approach, singer and songwriter Chris Cummings rose to prominence in the late 1990s as an artist aligned with the New Traditionalist strand of contemporary country. Born in Norton, New Brunswick, he first performed publicly at age five and remained a local favorite through his early years. At fourteen he issued a self-released cassette that reached Warner/Reprise president Jim Ed Norman in Nashville, who recognized the teenager’s considerable promise; the recording likewise attracted California businessman Peter Leggett, who arranged a summer engagement for the young performer at the Western Connection in Pasadena. Assisted by Leggett, Cummings prepared a stronger demo that again landed on Norman’s desk, prompting the executive to telephone the singer, who was summoned from a high school math class to speak with Reprise’s Nashville offices. Norman nevertheless concluded that further development was needed, so Cummings spent the following five years in Nashville refining his craft as both performer and writer. His self-titled debut album appeared first in Canada in 1996, where it yielded the hit singles “Sure Enough” and “I Waited,” before reaching the United States in early 1998.
