Chris Emerson, a singer-songwriter from the Boston region, first attracted notice when television placed his compositions into rotation, as Dawson's Creek and Scrubs premiered his singles. Long a fixture on the local scene after 1996, he devoted the ensuing period to composing material and shaping his distinctive approach. Once Dianne Warren furnished a track written expressly for him, Emerson headed into the studio to cut Tourist, issued in fall 2002.
