Biography
Chris Hunter draws his chief inspiration from David Sanborn, whose alto sound he frequently mirrors, yet he achieved his widest American recognition through his association with Gil Evans. He took up music at twelve and, at nineteen, toured with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. After working with Mike Westbrook between 1978 and 1979, Hunter settled into studio work throughout Europe. His first encounter with Evans came in 1983 and soon prompted a move to New York. In 1984 he toured with Evans, joined the Michel Camilo sextet, and began an ongoing partnership with Mike Gibbs. He later issued leader sessions for Atlantic and the Japanese Paddle Wheel label.
