Since the early 1980s Canadian composer Chris Meloche has created works for electro-acoustic and multimedia performance, although only a fraction of that material has appeared on limited cassette editions and, in more recent years, on experimental ambient imprints. His formal education in the discipline has remained modest, yet he has undertaken independent examination of Stockhausen, Reich, Cage, Riley, and Subotnick together with Throbbing Gristle, Can, Brian Eno, and Tangerine Dream. Meloche’s pieces generally occupy the textural, experimental region of ambient electronics and integrate sounds drawn from the surrounding environment inside expansive forms that frequently extend across several hours. In 1982 he co-founded M104 with Werner Albert, an ensemble that delivered live performances and produced scores intended to accompany silent films. More recently Meloche has concentrated on solo projects realized through commissions funded by the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council, with radio performances and broadcasts forming the greater part of his output. Several of those lengthy works have reached compact disc in abbreviated editions, most prominently on the Frankfurt-based Fax label with Recurring Dreams of the Urban Myth and Wireless as well as Distant Rituals on Silent Records. He is also a founding member of the Canadian Electroacoustic Community and the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, and from his home in Ontario he hosts the weekly electronic music program Wired for Sound.
