Chris Moyles ranks among the United Kingdom’s most prominent yet polarizing disc jockeys, and the Radio 1 Breakfast Show presenter has repeatedly shaped the nation’s singles and album rankings. Born in Leeds in 1974, he launched his on-air career through hospital radio before securing paid positions in Ayr, Luxembourg, and Stoke. Following his departure from the late-night program at Capital FM, he arrived at Radio 1 in 1997 for the four-to-seven a.m. shift. Rising listener interest prompted several schedule adjustments until he secured the flagship breakfast slot in 2004, where the audience promptly grew by one million. That same year Moyles and his production team cut “Dogs Don’t Kill People (Wabbitz Do),” a send-up of the Goldie Lookin’ Chain single that displaced U2’s “Vertigo” from the top of the Official Download Chart. The Parody Album, issued in 2009 and boasting cover versions of JLS (“Meat Again”), La Roux (“Waterproofs”), and Alesha Dixon (“The Boy Does Plenty”), featured guest appearances from Calvin Harris and Kaiser Chiefs’ Ricky Wilson. The collection debuted at number 17—surpassing new releases by Rihanna and Mariah Carey—and ultimately sold 100,000 copies. Moyles further affected the official singles listings by spotlighting unexpected tracks, among them Billie Piper’s 1999 hit “Honey to the Bee” and the John Barrowman album cut “I Made It Through the Rain”; both reached the Top 20 after he urged listeners to purchase the downloads. Also in 2009 he surpassed Tony Blackburn’s tenure to become Radio 1’s longest-serving presenter, and alongside fellow host Dave Vitty he collected funds for Comic Relief while establishing a Guinness World Record for more than fifty-one consecutive hours on air. Moyles departed Radio 1 in September 2012, succeeded on the Breakfast Show by Nick Grimshaw.
