Biography
Born Christopher Mark Robinson on 20 December 1966 in Marietta, Georgia, USA, he rose to prominence as frontman for the American retro-rock outfit the Black Crowes. More than ten years after forming that group he stepped out on his own in 2002. He had started the Black Crowes alongside his younger brother Rich, shaping its sound after veteran rock acts such as the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin. Around the turn of the millennium he became romantically linked with actress Kate Hudson, known for her portrayal of a groupie in the 2000 film Almost Famous and as the daughter of Goldie Hawn. Their marriage on New Year’s Eve 2000 quickly prompted speculation that the Black Crowes were about to dissolve. Although similar rumours had circulated for years, 2002 was the year the band actually entered hiatus.
Later that year he released his first solo album, New Earth Mud, a record whose style and approach naturally recalled the Black Crowes’ earlier work. To support it he undertook his initial solo tour, backed by guitarist and co-writer Paul Stacey, drummer Jeremy Stacey, bassist George Reiff and keyboardist George Laks. With those musicians he completed a second album, This Magnificent Distance, a tighter and more forceful rock collection than its predecessor. After its release he assembled another group for a summer tour and then withdrew from view. He reappeared in 2005 as part of the reunited Black Crowes, and the following year he and his brother Rich Robinson embarked on a low-key tour together.
