Biography
Anyone perusing the liner notes of early-’80s British metal releases would recognize the name Chris Tsangarides. A dedicated follower of the genre, he oversaw sessions for acts ranging from Helloween and Ozzy Osbourne to the Tygers of Pan Tang and the more pop-oriented Tigertailz. He also managed to steer clear of stylistic confinement, collaborating with artists as varied as Billy Ocean and Depeche Mode. His introduction to the studio came in 1975 when a friend encouraged him to pursue engineering, landing him at London’s Morgan Studios. The following year he assisted on Judas Priest’s Sad Wings of Destiny, and the subsequent explosion of Britain’s new wave of heavy metal cemented his trajectory. Although metal bands such as Anvil formed the core of his work, Tsangarides deliberately broadened his scope to include underground and alternative projects, among them Stiv Bators and Concrete Blonde—the latter enlisting him for their albums Free, Bloodletting, and Walking in London. In 1990 he rejoined the group that had launched his career, producing Judas Priest’s Painkiller, and remained active through the rest of the decade.
