Biography
Christopher Denny's sound fuses gospel and country roots in ways that align closely with an upbringing centered on church music. As a singer and songwriter whose voice carries an otherworldly quality reminiscent of Antony and the Johnsons' Antony, and to a milder extent Jeff Buckley, he first grasped a guitar at fourteen and turned to songwriting shortly afterward. Time spent at his great-uncle's residence uncovered a cache of Lefty Frizzell and Hank Thompson records that left a lasting mark on the teenager. Armed with his grandfather's approval and a guitar handed down from the elder musician, Denny launched his own path. Early momentum proved unsteady: barely a week into sessions for his first album alongside the Old Soles, he parted ways with the producers and forfeited the allocated budget. Back in his native Little Rock, Arkansas, he reached out to Jason Weinheimer, who permitted Denny to helm production at the studio while serving as engineer. Age Old Hunger appeared in August 2007 and prompted immediate touring. Persistent difficulties marked the following years as Denny worked toward sobriety while finishing a second album. After repeated setbacks on both fronts, he achieved success in each, issuing the long-awaited If the Roses Don't Kill Us during summer 2014.
