Biography
Chrysanths marks the independent outlet for Glaswegian singer and songwriter Emily Scott, already recognized as the guiding force behind the chamber-pop experimentalists Modern Studies. A multi-instrumentalist whose voice carries a dulcet tone and whose compositional range draws from folk, classical, jazz, and indie rock, Scott initially shaped the project around piano and vocals alone before enlarging its scope with intricate string parts and a rhythm section. The resulting first album under the Chrysanths name, Leave No Shadow, reached listeners in 2024.
Modern Studies itself originated in 2015 from a group of pieces Scott had composed for an antique pedal organ. As pianist, double bassist, and guitarist, she joined her bandmates in crafting a succession of exploratory, boundary-crossing records for Fire Records, among them Welcome Strangers in 2018 and We Are There in 2022. Beyond the group, Scott maintains an active role as composer and educator.
Under the Chrysanths moniker her material balances melancholy with brightness, fusing contrasting moods and idioms while echoing the idiosyncratic lineage of Jean-Claude Vannier and early-period Scott Walker. The self-produced Leave No Shadow, which carries her detailed string arrangements, surfaced on Glasgow’s Chemikal Underground imprint in September 2024.
