Formed in Chicago, Illinois, during 1989, the American death metal outfit Cianide began when Mike Perun (bass/vocals) and Scott Carroll (guitar) joined forces. Two early demo cassettes, Funeral and Second Life, first drew attention within their scene. Drummer Jeff Kabella soon joined, allowing the group’s weighty playing and persistent lyrical focus on decay to reach more listeners, and the resulting trio surfaced commercially in 1992 via The Dying Truth. Drawing from Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Venom and Death, the 1994 release A Descent Into Hell offered another venomous statement that featured a cover of Canadian death metal act Slaughter’s “Death Dealer.” After Kabella exited, Andy Kuizin took the drum chair for the 1996 Rage War demo, later issued by Cyronics Records. The next year’s Death, Doom And Destruction expanded the lineup to a quartet through the arrival of second guitarist Jim Bresnahan. Merciless Records put out Divide And Conquer, Cianide’s first album of the 2000s. Bresnahan’s departure returned the band to trio format, yet they have persisted in their traditional death metal approach, albeit with gradually waning impact.
