Formed in Georgia, Cicada Rhythm blends upbeat acoustic folk carrying a Southern swing with powerfully atmospheric indie rock. The project unites guitarist and vocalist David Kirslis with bassist and vocalist Andrea DeMarcus, who first crossed paths in 2011. At the time Kirslis worked as a part-time teacher and blues devotee who enjoyed hopping trains, while DeMarcus, having completed her classical studies at Juilliard, had settled in Athens, Georgia. Their musical temperaments meshed immediately, his rootsy leanings balancing her conservatory background, and the pair soon began composing material together. Music and romance intertwined, prompting them to perform publicly under the Cicada Rhythm name. They later moved to Atlanta, where steady touring across the South built a strong following. A four-song demo uploaded to their website expanded their reach, leading the duo to begin recording an album in 2013. Completion funds arrived through an online crowdfunding effort, and the resulting album, Mantra, appeared in 2014. Favorable press coverage followed, spurring a nationwide tour. Growing recognition brought a deal with Normaltown Records, the New West Records subsidiary focused on nurturing new talent. After issuing a 7" vinyl single in June 2015, the duo delivered its second full-length effort, titled Cicada Rhythm, in late October 2015.
