CJ Bolland entered the world in Yorkshire during 1971, yet his family relocated to Belgium just three years later. An immersion in dance music came early, as his parents operated a club in Antwerp where his mother performed as a DJ. Exposure to synthesizer sounds spanning multiple periods—from Jean-Michel Jarre through Front 242 and the Neon Judgement—filled his youth, though house and techno claimed most of his attention by the close of the 1980s.

Production work commenced for Bolland in 1988 once a drummer acquaintance supplied the necessary equipment, leading quickly to airplay on various Belgian pirate radio stations. Demo submissions to record labels eventually yielded a response from R&S Records.

The Project's "Do That Dance," his initial effort for R&S, propelled his career forward, soon followed by appearances under the guises of Pulse, Space Opera—collaborating with Cisco Ferreira of the Advent—Cee-Jay, Ravesignal, and Sonic Solution. Recognition surged in 1992 with the Ravesignal 3 EP, particularly via the cut "Horsepower," elevating him among prominent figures in the worldwide dance scene.

His debut full-length, The 4th Sign, arrived shortly thereafter. During 1993 and 1994, he contributed productions to tracks by Mundo Muzique, Dave Angel, and Joey Beltram while crafting remixes for Orbital, the Prodigy, Sven Väth, Westbam, Tori Amos, Baby Ford, and additional artists. Electronic Highway, his next album, emerged in 1995, prompting a substantial five-album agreement with Internal Records. The Analogue Theatre marked the initial output from that arrangement upon its late-1996 release, earning acclaim from critics alongside strong dance-chart performance driven by the energetic single "Sugar Is Sweeter."
