C.L. Blast, a Birmingham, Alabama native steeped in traditional Southern soul with pronounced gospel influences, never managed to spark significant attention beyond the South and received only modest notice even there. After an upbringing centered on gospel, he transitioned into soul and performed with various local and regional ensembles. In 1980 he released the single “I Take the Case,” followed by the album I Wanna Get Down on Cotillion/Atlantic, and four years later he partnered with vocalist and producer Frederick Knight for work on Park Place. Despite solid production and execution, the single “50/50 Love” failed to generate meaningful interest, and the album C.L. Blast met the same outcome.
