Clare Quilty emerged from Charlottesville, VA as a band that blended alternative grooves with elements of electronica and trip-hop. Jenn Rhubright handled the vocals, while Michael Rodi played guitar, Chris Ruotolo handled bass duties, and Jimmy J. Amburgey sat behind the drums. Their first release, Suga-Lik, arrived in 1997 via the Washington, D.C.-based independent label Dcide; national distribution followed in March 1998 after the imprint secured a deal with WEA. Strong surfaced two years later in 2000, after which the group issued the 2003 EP Tremble. That EP contained dance remixes of its title track, drawn from the then-upcoming full-length Face the Strange.
