Biography
Claude Williamson, a top-tier bop pianist shaped by the style of Bud Powell, maintained an active presence as a performer on the West Coast across five decades starting from the 1950s onward. As the elder sibling of trumpeter Stu Williamson, he took up the piano at age seven, receiving a decade of classical training while also enrolling at the New England Conservatory. His initial significant professional engagement came in 1947 alongside Charlie Barnet's orchestra. Subsequent engagements included periods with Red Norvo in 1948, Barnet's bebop big band during 1949, and June Christy from 1950 to 1951. Throughout the 1950s, he maintained regular collaborations with Bud Shank, Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars, his personal trios, and various studio projects. Most of the 1960s and 1970s found him occupied in studio work, yet he reentered the jazz scene during the 1980s without substantial alteration to his improvisational approach. Sessions under his leadership appeared on Capitol from 1954 to 1955, as well as on Bethlehem, Criterion, Contract between 1961 and 1962, Sea Breeze in 1977, Interplay, Discovery, Fresh Sound, and several Japanese imprints; notably, he produced an evocative homage to Bud Powell on V.S.O.P. in 1995. Williamson sustained consistent performances in the Los Angeles region and released further recordings well into the 2000s. In July 2016, Claude Williamson passed away at 89 years old.
