Biography
Clayton Anderson blends country-pop songwriting with instincts rooted in Midwestern roots-rock. His initial opportunity arrived in 2008 when he claimed victory in Kenny Chesney’s Next Big Star contest. The Indiana native unveiled his first full-length project, Torn Jeans & Tailgates, in 2011 and steadily cultivated an independent audience through the later releases Right Where I Belong (2014), Only to Borrow (2016), and Made in the USA (2022).
Born and raised in Bedford, Indiana, Anderson began playing guitar almost incidentally while attending college. Local heroes John Mellencamp, Michael Jackson, and John Hiatt shaped his early style, leading him from campus parties and neighborhood bars into the broader Midwestern frat circuit. After completing his studies at Indiana University, he had largely set music aside until he entered Kenny Chesney’s Next Big Star battle-of-the-bands event at Cincinnati’s Riverbend Music Center in 2008. Following a 15-minute performance, his band was named the winner and immediately booked as the opening act for Chesney’s concert the following evening.
That outcome prompted Anderson to give his musical ambitions another serious attempt, so he relocated to Nashville and independently issued Torn Jeans & Tailgates in 2011. Two further self-released projects followed—Right Where I Belong in 2014 and the EP Only to Borrow in 2016—while extensive touring placed him alongside Eric Church, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Jimmy Buffett, Thomas Rhett, Lee Brice, and Carly Pearce.
In 2021 he issued the singles “Only Us” and “Nothin’ But Net,” the latter featured by ESPN during the college basketball season. Early the next year, Nash Overstreet produced “Get After It,” which later appeared on the album Made in the USA. Anderson opened 2023 with the stand-alone single “Gotta Get Up.”
