Originating from Liverpool, England, the Clayton Squares took their name from the city’s Clayton Square and operated as a potent R&B outfit that arrived after the Merseybeat wave had already peaked. Mike Evans on tenor saxophone and serving as leader, Denny Alexander handling vocals and rhythm guitar, Pete Dunn on lead guitar and organ, Les Smith on alto saxophone, Geoff Jones on bass, and Bobby Scott on drums formed the original roster. The group cut a pair of strong Decca singles titled “Come And Get It” and “There She Is,” yet steady road work and repeated international TV slots never translated into sales momentum. In 1966 the band dissolved, prompting Evans to link up with guitarist Andy Roberts for the later incarnation of the Liverpool Scene.
