Biography
Clifford Curzon ranked among England's most distinguished pianists of the twentieth century, celebrated for lucid, self-effacing accounts of the core German Classical and Romantic repertoire. A reserved scholar with an imposing command of the keyboard, he brought comparable conviction to works by Mozart and Liszt alike. Listeners frequently praised this capacity to foreground each composer's individual voice rather than his own as his defining trait. Curzon maintained an exclusive association with Decca that spanned more than three decades, resulting in a compact yet distinguished body of recordings, among which his interpretations of Mozart and Schubert stand out as particularly distinguished.
He attained early recognition through a scholarship awarded by London's Royal Academy of Music in 1919. An outstanding student record secured every available piano prize at the institution, culminating in his professional debut in 1923 when he performed Bach's Triple Concerto under Henry Wood at a Promenade Concert held in Queen's Hall. Still only nineteen, Curzon received an invitation in 1926 to join the RAM faculty, where he taught until 1932 before committing fully to a concert career. While on the faculty he undertook extended periods of study abroad, first with Artur Schnabel in Berlin and subsequently with Wanda Landowska and Nadia Boulanger in Paris. In 1936 he toured Europe as recital partner of violist Lionel Tertis, and three years later he introduced himself to American audiences at New York's Town Hall. From 1941 onward he began making records for Decca, initiating a partnership that continued almost until his death.
An uncompromising perfectionist, Curzon routinely withheld recordings he judged unsatisfactory, among them concerto performances with conductors George Szell, István Kertész, and Benjamin Britten. Such decisions contributed to a public image of him as demanding and occasionally volatile, an impression at odds with his characteristically withdrawn demeanor and the poised refinement of his playing. He received a knighthood in 1977.
