Cloak/Dagger came together in October 2006 as a side project uniting players from several minor hardcore bands rooted in the Richmond, VA, scene. The roster includes singer Jason Mazzola of Count Me Out and Time Flies, guitarist Colin Barth from Trial by Fire and Renee Heartfelt, bassist Aaron Barth likewise tied to Striking Distance and Renee Heartfelt, and drummer Colin Kimble of Count Me Out and Time Flies, distinct from the Colin Kimble serving as lead guitarist for the Baton Rogue-based Christian hardcore act As Cities Burn.

Immediately after forming, the group began working the East Coast hardcore circuit and landed a deal with Washington, D.C.-based Jade Tree Records in early 2007. Their first vinyl outing, the 7" single “Pinata Breaks,” appeared in spring 2007; digital services instead carried the expanded EP Pinata Breaks, Demo Takes, which appended six previously unreleased demos to the three songs from the 7". Later in 2007 the band delivered its debut full-length, We Are.

Cloak/Dagger then toured Europe and performed at The Fest in Florida before issuing the follow-up album Lost Art in late 2009.
