Clowns emerged from Melbourne in 2009 as an Australian hardcore punk band whose aggressive approach combined melodic elements with a chaotic streak of sonic experimentation. The group issued three albums on the local Poison City imprint throughout the mid-2010s, steadily expanding their reach overseas before issuing Nature/Nurture in 2019, their debut outing on Fat Wreck Chords. That record marked their first appearance on the Australian charts and secured a nomination at the ARIA Awards. After a four-year interval, they returned with Endless in 2023, an album that delved into questions of immortality while shifting toward a heavier metal edge.

The quartet that formed the band’s original lineup—vocalist Stevie Williams, guitarist Joe Hansen, bassist James Ahern, and drummer Jake Laderman—put out a self-titled EP in 2010. From their earliest material they merged bruising hardcore punk with concise hooks and unexpected sonic detours. After joining Poison City Records they unveiled their first full-length effort, I’m Not Right, in late 2013. Bad Blood followed in early 2015, coinciding with the first roster adjustment when Jarrod Goon took over guitar duties from Hansen; the next year Hanny Tilbrook assumed bass responsibilities from Ahern while Will Robinson joined as a second guitarist. This revised configuration tracked the band’s third album, Lucid Again, released in 2017. By then Clowns had built a name for themselves through explosive concerts and intense recordings that drew from noisy punk, garage, and metal yet remained anchored by accessible pop melodies.

A move to Fat Wreck Chords brought wider international attention with the 2019 release of Nature/Nurture, which climbed to number 31 on the ARIA pop chart and earned a nomination for Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album at that year’s ARIA Awards. As pandemic conditions reshaped the early 2020s, the musicians adapted by tracking new material at home, focusing on themes of resilience, fortitude, and immortality. Cameron Rust replaced Robinson on guitar, and the resulting fifth album, Endless, appeared in October 2023 via Fat Wreck, reaching number 36 on the ARIA charts.
