The Dallas, TX-based outfit Clumsy frequently draws comparisons to earlier Minneapolis acts like the Replacements and Soul Asylum for its high-energy approach. That connection traces back to Marc Soloman, who had already played in Tommy Stinson’s L.A.-based project Perfect before relocating to Dallas and founding Clumsy alongside Rob Cooper. Stinson, once the Replacements’ celebrated prodigy, had disbanded Perfect to join Guns n’ Roses. An initial version of Clumsy also included Goo Goo Dolls drummer Mike Malinin, who contributed to the band’s first demos. The group quickly built local excitement in Dallas through its energetic performances and landed a deal with Idol Records. Clumsy then tracked its debut album, 2001’s Center of Attention Deficit Disorder, in Michigan alongside producer Tim Patalan of Sponge and Fretblanket.
