Biography
Clyde Lucas, born in the USA, assembled Clyde Lucas And His California Dons during the initial years of the 1930s. Fronting the ensemble through his vocal performances, Lucas occasionally shared the spotlight with the quartet ‘Four Men Only’. The group's instrumentation featured four saxophones, a pair of trumpets, and four rhythm section members, with violins added on select occasions. To enhance adaptability, players frequently handled multiple instruments. ‘Dance Mood’ served as their signature tune, while their output appeared infrequently on Vocalion Records and Columbia Records. Engagements primarily took place at California hotels until the band broadened its schedule across the United States. Lucas secured considerable work in cinema, composing and performing incidental music for early motion pictures. As the 1940s drew to a close, the ensemble's appeal diminished in line with numerous other dance orchestras, leading to the end of their performances.
