Originating from San Francisco, California, the Cocktails traffic in an energetic, melody-driven variety of rock they label "slop-pop." Pat Clos, serving as lead vocalist and guitarist, formed the outfit in May 2012 alongside Lauren Matsui, who contributes vocals, guitar, and keyboards. Drawing from classic power pop and indie rock, the two quickly brought in bassist Rion Rinker and drummer Phil Lantz, after which they began developing original songs. The resulting quartet captured a four-song EP that June; Father/Daughter Records issued the self-titled recording in February 2013, raising the band’s visibility throughout the Northern California indie circuit. Grazer Records followed with a three-song single from the Cocktails in December 2013, pairing “Friday” with “Let It Come Down” and “Panda Eyes.” Guitarist Joel Cusumano’s arrival in 2014 expanded the group to a quintet, and by midyear they had issued their debut full-length, Adult Life, on Father/Daughter while also performing at the South by Southwest Music Conference to promote the album. Extensive West Coast touring ensued, leading to the 2016 release of their second album, Hypochondriac.
