Biography
Cold Roses, an independent Philadelphia outfit formed in the 21st century, draw from a traditional rock & roll approach built around expansive sound and emotional depth, fusing a driving rhythm section with touches of soul, folk, and blues. Their 2017 debut album, Escape to Anywhere, highlighted this combination.
Vocalist and guitarist Rob Clancy, who took the band name from a Ryan Adams song, assembled Cold Roses during the early 2010s. After some time, he finalized the roster with keyboardist Dan Finn, trumpeter Rick Rein, drummer R.M. "Robby" Webb, and saxophonist Tom Petraccaro, an atypical instrumental configuration that reveals Clancy’s admiration for soul music and Bruce Springsteen. Before this endeavor, Clancy and Webb had performed together in multiple groups, yet the singer and songwriter initiated the new project in 2012 and soon recorded an EP.
Frequent live appearances around their hometown helped Cold Roses connect with listeners. These shows drew notice from influential figures in Philadelphia’s music scene, including repeated recognition from radio station WMMR, which named the band Artist of the Month both early on and again in 2015. The group tracked Escape to Anywhere in Los Angeles alongside producers David J. Holman and Roger Paglia before issuing the album that July.
