Biography
Coley Jones cut a total of seventeen sides for Columbia, appearing both under his own name and as leader of the Dallas String Band, giving him a modestly larger recorded presence than several fellow artists included on Harry Smith’s 1952 Anthology of American Folk Music. Prior to entering the studio he had performed with a traveling minstrel show. Between 1927 and 1929 the Dallas String Band, which featured Sam Harris on guitar and Marco Washington on bass, waxed ten numbers for the label. Jones subsequently directed the Coley Jones String Band, the unit in which pioneering Texas guitarist T-Bone Walker first gained experience; Washington was Walker’s uncle.
