Biography
Canadian singer/songwriter Colin Amey first drew attention through his vocal performances at age three during a neighborhood fair. His family moved to Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory two years later, and a CBC Journal segment profiled him before his tenth birthday. Regular wins in talent contests preceded another family relocation to Edmonton, where he shared stages at the Klondike Days festival with k.d. lang, Ronnie Hawkins, and the Gatlin Brothers. At fifteen he returned to Ontario, recording commercials and working as a demo and studio vocalist while appearing alongside leading country acts including Shenandoah, Bryan White, Joe Diffie, Wade Hayes, Pirates of the Mississippi, Perfect Strangers, and the Wilkinsons.
"Gonna Last Forever" reached number 16 on Canadian charts in 1990. In 1996 he received the Heartbeat Award for Best Songwriter plus a Best Performer honor after a muscular dystrophy charity concert. His debut single, "I Wish She Was Mine," arrived in fall 1998, prompting nominations that included Outstanding New Male Artist from the 1999 Big Country Awards and Independent Male Artist from the Canadian Country Music Awards the same year.
"Could've Fooled Me" entered rotation in spring 1999, with "You're Crazy Too" following that summer. The self-titled debut album surfaced later in 1999, containing songs written entirely by Amey except one co-write with John Collins. What My Heart Don't Know appeared in 2000, the same year he collected the Rising Star Award from the Ontario Country Performer's Fan Association. His band Ransom features Wade Foster, Joel LeBreton, and Michael Hunt.
