Biography
Originally based in California, Color Green specialize in a laid-back strain of psychedelic rock that incorporates elements of art rock, funk, and roots traditions, conjuring earlier eras while steering clear of tired imitation. Guitarists Noah Kohll and Corey Madden established the project in 2018, and their initial public notice arrived via a self-released, four-track EP from 2021 that was captured entirely at home; the recording captured the relaxed yet fervent spirit of their explorations along with the distinctive guitar dialogue between the two founders. Once aligned with Aquarium Drunkard Records, the band introduced greater studio refinement on their debut album, Color Green, which surfaced in 2022, and they refined their approach further after moving to New West Records ahead of Fool’s Parade in 2024.
Kohll, born in Omaha, Nebraska, absorbed early musical impressions from his mother, who was employed at a record store and favored Jimi Hendrix and Prince, as well as his father, a pharmacist devoted to the Band and AC/DC. Madden, by contrast, grew up surrounded by the Rolling Stones and Motown singles from the 1960s; at age twelve a friend of his brother handed him a Stratocaster copy, prompting him to learn without formal instruction. During their late teens and early twenties both musicians performed in multiple groups—Kohll with Young Guv and Surf Curse, Madden alongside Grave Flowers Bongo Band and Paranoiac—before the pair crossed paths at a coffee roasting company in Brooklyn, New York. Madden maintained a rehearsal space, and after several informal sessions Color Green took shape. Following their move to Ridgewood, Queens, the duo focused on writing and used a Tascam 488 Portastudio to document the songs that became the 2021 EP, issued on cassette and digitally after they had relocated to the California desert. Much of the material for their first long-player had already been composed while they stayed with friends in Taos, New Mexico, during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. Rather than track at home, they booked time at Jonny Kosmo’s Slimehouse Studio, resulting in the July 2022 release of Color Green, a more refined and varied set issued jointly by Aquarium Drunkard Records and ORG Music. Subsequent touring and positive coverage in independent outlets helped solidify a stable quartet featuring Kyla Perlmutter on bass and vocals plus Corey Rose on drums and vocals. This rising profile led New West Records to sign the group, which released Fool’s Parade in July 2024.
