Late in 2001 a rock band took shape in York, England, and secured a deal with Riverman Records only twelve months afterward. Close friends Owen Richards on guitar and vocals and Stuart Jones on guitar and vocals started the project after several acoustic performances; they soon added Thom Craigen on bass and Matthew Lunn on drums. The group borrowed its name from a Boards Of Canada dance track and earned notable UK airplay on Steve Lamacq’s Evening Sessions and the BBC Radio 1 Rock Show with its debut single “Decisions Decisions.” Catchy riffs paired with soaring vocals in the style of Muse helped shape a commercial heavy-rock sound that drew listeners from both indie and metal circles. August 2004 brought the release of the debut album Pearl Necklace, produced by Steve Osborne (U2 / Placebo) and featuring the memorable single “Exile” alongside the emo-tinged “Italics.” Although the record made little impression on the mainstream UK charts, it established a loyal audience. Colour Of Fire joined Placebo for an extensive European tour in autumn 2004, yet the band surprisingly disbanded a few months later. Richards and Lunn have since pursued separate musical ventures.
