Biography
Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle, longtime friends and fellow musicians, come together for this collaborative effort. Born in 1955 and raised in Texas, Earle absorbed the influence of the Lone Star State's vibrant songwriting scene, most notably Townes Van Zandt. Following years of effort to establish himself in Nashville, he achieved both critical and commercial recognition in 1986 with his debut full-length release, Guitar Town. Despite subsequent personal and professional obstacles, Earle spent the following three decades developing into one of the most highly regarded figures within the Americana community.
Colvin, born in South Dakota in 1965, first performed in hard rock and retro-country groups before relocating to New York City, where she began building a reputation as a singer and songwriter. After contributing backing vocals to Suzanne Vega's hit single "Luka," she secured a recording contract, and her first album, Steady On from 1989, brought her a Grammy in the Best Contemporary Folk Recording category. Commercial breakthrough and further acclaim arrived with the successes of "I Don't Know Why" and "Sunny Came Home."
The pair first met in 1987 when both were scheduled to perform the same night in Northampton, Massachusetts. Their acquaintance grew, leading Colvin to record a version of Earle's "Someday" on her 1994 album Cover Girl. Over the ensuing years they made occasional guest appearances at each other's concerts, and in 2014 they undertook a co-headlining tour. Impressed by those performances, Earle proposed that the two make a joint record. Colvin consented, and under Buddy Miller's production the sessions for Colvin & Earle were completed in under two weeks. Fantasy Records issued the album in June 2016, after which the artists again toured together in support.
