Though many first encountered Comes with the Fall through William DuVall’s later role in Alice in Chains, the band had already spent years building its own reputation and amassing honors well before DuVall filled in for the late Layne Staley on Alice’s 2006 tour. DuVall serves as the group’s central figure, frontman, guitarist, and chief songwriter. After fronting underground punk outfits throughout the 1980s and later contributing songs to other artists—including co-writing the pop hit “I Know” for Dionne Farris—he launched Madfly near the end of the decade. That hard-rocking unit issued two albums, Get the Silver and White Hot in the Black, before evolving into Comes with the Fall in 1999. Originally formed in Atlanta, Georgia, the lineup of bassist Adam Stanger, drummer Bevan Davies, and, for a short time, second guitarist Nico Constantine, moved to Los Angeles the following year. All subsequent releases appeared on DuVall’s own DVL imprint: the self-titled debut in 2000, The Year Is One in 2001, and Live 2002 in 2002. The band then supported Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell on the Degradation Trip tour, acting as both opener and backing group. A live DVD, Live Underground 2002, arrived in 2003, followed by the 2006 EP The Reckoning. That same year DuVall paused his work with Comes with the Fall to join Alice in Chains for their first concerts since 1996, after which he returned to the band and oversaw the release of Beyond the Last Light in 2007.
