Biography
Originating from Huntsville, Alabama’s Oakwood University in the same manner as Take 6, Committed functions as an a cappella vocal sextet whose members—Dennis Baptiste, Tommy Gervais, Geston Pierre, Robert Pressley, Maurice Staple, and Therry Thomas—draw upon jazz, gospel, doo wop, and R&B traditions. National recognition came their way through participation in the second season of NBC’s The Sing-Off competition, where their interpretations of material by Maroon 5, OneRepublic, the Police, Backstreet Boys, Usher, Al Green, Boyz II Men, and Michael Jackson propelled them to victory over Street Corner Symphony, securing a trophy along with $100,000 and an Epic recording contract. Their self-titled album appeared in stores less than nine months after the win, incorporating renditions of Stevie Wonder's “As” and Maxwell's “Pretty Wings,” and it entered the Billboard 200 at number 171 on September 17, 2011.
