Formed in 2001, the Brooklyn quartet Company blended folk and country elements with an earthy style of rock & roll in the vein of the Traveling Wilburys. David Janik on drums joined multi-instrumentalists Adam Davison, Stephanie Rabins, and Christopher Teret after the four first crossed paths as students at Bard College in the Hudson Valley; the group later moved to Brooklyn, where they lined up multiple residencies at neighborhood clubs. Following positive notices from outlets including Time Out New York, Company put out a run of self-released albums and eventually joined the roster of Brah Records, the imprint overseen by their sometime road companions Oneida. Parallel Time came out in 2005, after which Oneida’s Kid Millions was enlisted to helm the next record. Old Baby arrived in February 2008 and marked a shift away from the ensemble’s earlier live-oriented approach.
