L.A.-based trio Conexión Divina, whose name translates as “Divine Connection,” refresh the sierreño tradition through a wistful, melody-driven approach that fuses pop elements with the regional style. Their presence also marks them as one of the rare all-female ensembles in a field long dominated by male performers. As part of a broader generation that has propelled classic Mexican regional sounds toward mainstream U.S. success by merging them with contemporary pop, the group originated in 2021 when Texan Sandra Calixto—whose idea launched the project—connected online with Angelena Liz Trujillo from Los Angeles, who handles vocals and guitar, and Arizona’s Ashlee Valenzuela, who plays 12-string guitar. The three began by sharing covers and working remotely across state lines, drawing influence from Vicente Fernández, Selena, Jenni Rivera, Gerardo Ortíz, and Ivan Cornejo. Once their recordings gained traction on social platforms, they converged in Los Angeles to pursue a professional career.

September 2022 brought the announcement of their Sony Music Latin contract along with the premiere of their first single, “Odio,” which depicts unreturned affection. The track, together with later releases such as “La Receta” and “Paso a Pasito,” was included on the band’s debut album, Tres Mundos, issued the next April and greeted with strong critical praise. Guest appearances on the record came from fellow artists los Aptos and Gabito Ballesteros. Within days of the album’s arrival, Conexión Divina took the stage at Coachella; later the same year they earned a Latin Grammy nomination for best new act and appeared at the ceremony held in Seville, Spain. By the close of 2023 Valenzuela had departed, with Austinite Daniela Santiago stepping in as her successor.
